Patient support programs / Artificial intelligence

Alec Batoian

I’ve built patient support programs for more than 100 brands at multinational pharmaceutical companies. Now I’m developing AI tools to help patients stay on treatment.

Lessons from practice.

  1. Repeat purchases

The next purchase matters more than the first registration.

Registration shows who joined. Repeat purchases show who came back. If the goal is continued treatment, look beyond sign-ups.

  2. Access & services

A service catalog is not a patient journey.

Patients need to know when a service can help and how to use it. Adding more services will not fix an unclear next step.

  3. Devices

Design for the refill, not just the device.

Getting a meter is one step. Buying test strips is a recurring need. Plan for both when designing the patient offer and its costs.

  4. Generic launch

Give the offer a reason beyond price.

The lipid-profile test connected the offer to the patient’s treatment. It also gave medical representatives something specific to discuss with physicians.

  5. Digital engagement

    Every prompt needs a job.

A reminder should help someone take the next step. Decide what that step is and what follows it before writing the message.

  6. Diagnostic access

    Plan the steps between tests.

A patient may need a referral, a booking, transport or a follow-up. Decide who handles each step when planning the service and its budget.
