Patient support
A lab test gave a generic launch more to offer.
We paired a generic statin with a free lipid-profile test. It gave medical representatives a specific patient benefit to discuss with physicians, at a cost the program could support.

A manufacturer was launching a branded generic statin into a crowded market. Its medical representatives needed a clear answer to a physician’s question: why consider another brand?
An established branded-medicine program already offered patient support. The manufacturer wanted a credible offer of its own, with a budget suited to a lower-priced generic.
I led the design and delivery of the program.
Add a benefit connected to treatment
We built the offer around a basic lipid-profile test. A patient who bought the medicine and registered could receive one test at no charge, alongside the medicine purchase benefit.
The test gave representatives something specific to discuss with physicians. It also connected the support offer to follow-up during treatment, rather than making price the only reason to participate.
Design for the program’s budget
We budgeted for the expected use of the test. We did not assume that every eligible participant would take it up. The basic lipid profile was relatively inexpensive, and actual use was limited, as anticipated.
The medicine’s lower price kept the purchase-support cost down. Online processing reduced the work needed to service the program.
Together, those choices made the offer affordable to run.
Give the launch a clear point of difference
Medical representatives could present a medicine with a relevant patient benefit. The manufacturer gained a way to distinguish the launch without matching the spending of the larger branded-medicine program.
The result was a stronger offer and financially efficient delivery. The lesson was to design the patient benefit and its costs together, rather than choose the benefit first and solve the budget later.
From this project
What I learned.
- 01
Give the offer a reason beyond price.
The lipid-profile test connected the offer to the patient’s treatment. It also gave medical representatives something specific to discuss with physicians.
- 02
Budget for use, then check the assumptions.
Estimate how many patients will use each benefit and what delivery will cost. Compare those assumptions with actual use as the program runs.
