About
I build software.
And the business around it.
I’m Alec Batoian. I build healthcare businesses and the software they run on. My work spans pharmacy systems, patient support programs and, now, AI tools for patients and healthcare teams.
How I got here
At university, writing code felt like a way to build almost anything. While working on my thesis, I was invited to run a struggling pharmacy software company. The owner had little left to lose; I had little experience. That was my introduction to the pharmaceutical industry.
I stayed in it. I built pharmacy management systems and business reporting tools, then founded Olekstra, adapting ideas from U.S. pharmacy benefit managers to the local market.
Surviving the patient’s Tuesday
“Drugs don’t work in patients who don’t take them.”
— C. Everett Koop, quoted in The New England Journal of Medicine, 2005
In 2015, I shifted my focus to patient support programs. A WHO report on long-term treatment adherence helped shape that decision. Since then, I’ve built programs for more than 100 brands at multinational pharmaceutical companies. My agency’s programs have supported more than a million patients.
The questions are practical: can a patient find the medicine, afford it and keep taking it on an ordinary Tuesday? My work brings together the patient offer, pharmacy operations, software and reporting to help answer them.
Now, AI
AI has brought back some of the excitement I felt when I first learned to code. It makes ideas faster to test. Choosing a useful problem still takes experience.
I’m now applying twenty years in healthcare to AI tools for patients, physicians and pharmaceutical teams, with a focus on helping patients stay on treatment.
